Adam Klein (MIMF 2012)
Tenor ADAM KLEIN, of Setauket, N.Y., began in opera as a child at the Metropolitan in New York, as Yniold in PELLÉAS ET MÉLISANDE and Zweiter Knabe in DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE. Since returning to the Met as a tenor, he has sung lead roles in THE NOSE, Z MRTVEHO DOMU, HANSEL AND GRETEL, JEN_FA, PIQUE DAME, DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES, WAR AND PEACE, MAZEPPA, LE ROSSIGNOL, SALOME and ARABELLA; and has also understudied many other principal parts, most recently Gandhi in Philip Glass's SATYAGRAHA. Regionally he has performed major roles in many well-known operas from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS to DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, in cities across North America including Seattle, the two Portlands, San Francisco, Dallas, Central City, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Boston and Buffalo, among many others. Just to list the roles from the standard repertory: Bacchus, Canio, Cavaradossi, Chevalier Delaforce, Des Grieux (Puccini), Don José, Duke of Mantua, Edgardo, Erik, Grimoaldo, Herod, Hoffmann, Judge Danforth, Loge, Luigi, Manrico, Otello (Verdi), Rinuccio, Rodolfo, Siegmund, Števa, Tamino, and Werther. His musicianship allows him also to specialize in the difficult roles by Britten, Berg, Busoni, Dusapin, Schoenberg, Shostakovich, and most recently Tristan in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE with Seattle Opera. On the concert stage, when his opera career has allowed him the time, Mr. Klein holds the distinction of most solo appearances with the New York Choral Society, including the tenor solos in Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Janacek's Otče Naš, Kodaly's Psalmus Hungaricus, and Mahler's Eighth Symphony, which he also performed with the Boston Philharmonic. He also appeared in all three concerts given by Three Tenors: The Next Generation. Commercially he has recorded Mime on the Naxos recording "Scenes from Lohengrin and Siegfried", the Doctor in Robert Ashley's IMPROVEMENT: DON LEAVES LINDA for Elektra/Nonesuch, and a vocal solo on If, Bwana's I, ANGELICA on the Pogus label. Also an accomplished recording technician and composer, Klein has privately produced many CDs of his own concerts and compositions, including two operas: LEITHIAN, based on a story by J. R. R. Tolkien, which premiered in concerts in 2006 and 2007 in New York City; and GOLDIE LOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS, a children's opera about tolerance based on the classic fairy tale.
